A 3-drive RAID 5 is not useless -- you will get more available drive space than a mirror. For example, 3x36GB in RAID 5 gives you 2x36GB = 72GB of usable data space. In a RAID 1 configuration you could only get 1x36GB = 36GB, and the 3rd disc couldn't even be used.
